UN Hunts Somalis

MOGADISHU () -- UN forces began hunting Tuesday for Somali militiamen who killed seven Indian peacekeepers and wounded up to nine in an ambush attack.

Monday's clash was the worst between UN peacekeepers and Somalis since U.S. and other Western troops pulled out of the country in March leaving an Asian and African force of 18,700.

Somalis said they suspected the Habre Gedir militiamen of warlord Mohamed Farah Aideed, who killed 18 U.S. soldiers in Mogadishu on Oct. 3, a bloody battle which led to the pullout.

At the United Nations, the Security Council and Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali condemned the attack as "treacherous and cowardly."
