UN Halts Evacuation

KIGALI -- The United Nations halted a renewed effort to evacuate civilians trapped behind battlelines in the Rwanda capital on Friday after a bullet struck a truck packed with refugees, witnesses said. The convoy that was hit had picked up 174 refugees from Amahoro stadium in the rebel-held east of Kigali and crossed into government-controlled areas when it came under fire. Witnesses said the firing appeared to be from Rwanda Patriotic Front rebels trying to seize the capital. No one was hurt in the shooting but UN officials ordered a suspension of evacuations.
