Two Drown in Cesspit

Two sewage workers drowned in a cesspit in the Far East city of Vladivostok.

The accident happened when they were overcome by noxious gases, Russia's Postfactum news agency reported Friday.

The workers were making preparations to clean the cesspit at the time. One of them opened a manhole cover and inhaled trapped gases, the agency said.

He lost consciousness, fell in and drowned.

His colleague rushed to his aid but he, too, suffocated and drowned, the agency said, quoting a city council official.

The official said the workers had broken rules by not ventilating the pit and not wearing safety ropes.
