Turkish-Romanian Pact

Romania and Turkey agreed to give their economic ties a big push in broad accords that crowned a visit by Turkish President Suleyman Demirel.

In a final document after talks between Demirel and President Ion Iliescu, the neighbors agreed Friday to aim for a substantial increase in trade.

Last year Turkey imported $300 million worth of Romanian goods, and its exports to Romania were valued at $152 million, said Tuncer Macinli, commercial adviser at the Turkish embassy in Bucharest. Officials said they hoped to boost bilateral trade turnover to an annual $1 billion in the near future.
