Turkey Jails Kurds

ANKARA () -- A Turkish state security court jailed eight Kurdish parliamentarians Thursday for up to 15 years after dropping treason charges that carried the death penalty.

The court said the accused acted on orders from Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, which is battling for a separate state in southeast Turkey, and that they visited Ocalan's headquarters and urged people to support the PKK.

The case has alarmed Turkey's allies in the West and human rights groups.

"This is not a just and legal verdict," said Akin Birdal, chairman of Turkey's Human Rights Association. "Democracy and peace, so much needed in Turkey, have been seriously injured."
