Tajikistan Troops Kill Rebels

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Tajik forces killed at least 12 rebels and wounded seven in one day of fighting as part of a major government operation, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday. Four government soldiers were killed and nine wounded in the operation in three regions of the former Soviet republic. The 10-day sweep ended on June 17. Tajikistan's Russian-backed government has been fighting Islamic rebels for control of the Central Asian country since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The government claims the rebels are heavily supported by Afghan mujahedin across the border. The rebels have been launching almost daily attacks on Tajik police and army servicemen as well as Russian border guards over the past several weeks.
