Tajik Violence Escalates

MOSCOW -- Gunmen killed two Tajik military officers and two civilians in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe while a Russian soldier was shot dead in the south of the troubled former Soviet republic, officials said Friday. In Dushanbe, Interior Ministry officials said unidentified assailants killed two officers from the Tajik Defense Ministry in a Thursday night attack on one of the officers' flats. Two unnamed civilians also died in the shooting and a high-ranking Tajik military officer was wounded, they said. In the southern town of Kurgan-Tyube, one of the hot spots of Tajikistan's bloody clan war in 1992, unidentified gunmen shot dead a Russian peacekeeper Wednesday, Russian military officials told Itar-Tass.
