Tajik Official Killed

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Unknown gunmen shot dead a deputy defense minister of Tajikistan in the southeast of the former Soviet republic Wednesday, officials said. Military officials, who declined identification, said several Tajik soldiers with the deputy minister, Ramazan Radjabov, were also killed when his vehicle came under fire in the Garm valley, southeast of the capital, Dushanbe. "The Ministry of Defense is launching an investigation into this incident," government spokesman Zafar Saidov said. The Garm valley was one of the last strongholds of Tajik rebels who lost a civil war against ex-Communist forces in 1992 in which thousands were killed.
