NEW YORK -- Tabasco Cat took the lead from Go For Gin down the stretch after running second for most of the race and pulled away for a two-length victory in the Belmont Stakes. Go For Gin, the Kentucky Derby winner, took the lead out of the gate on Saturday and after entering the first turn wide, stayed in front by a slight margin around most of the 1 1/2 miles. Tabasco Cat, the Preakness Stakes winner, stayed within a few lengths before coming up along the outside on the final turn, and after a short nose-to-nose battle, pulled away to become the ninth 3-year-old to win both the Preakness and Belmont. Go for Gin was 3 1/2 lengths in front of Strodes Creek with Signal Tap, Amathos and Ulises completing the order of finish. The winner completed the distance in 2:26 4/5, the fifth fastest running in the 126-year history of the race. The victory was a sweet one for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who had gone from October 1991 until the Preakness without having won a Grade I stakes. Now he has won two straight.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
