Stampede Kills 112

NAGPUR, India () -- Indian police Thursday banned rallies in the central city of Nagpur and arrested the leader of a protest that ended in tragedy Wednesday when a police baton charge sparked a stampede killing 112 people.

Around 500 people were also injured in the stampede when police tried to disperse an estimated 50,000 tribal protestors demanding more jobs.

Sudhakar Gajbe, an organizer of the Adivasi Sangharsh Samiti, or Tribal Protest Forum, and two other followers were arrested early Thursday.

Opposition groups in the state of Maharashtra vowed to disrupt parliament until the state government resigned over the tragedy.
