Solzhenitsyn Not Surprised

After more than a week back in Russia, Alexander Solzhenitsyn has said that his homeland is living up to his expectations, Interfax reported. Solzhenitsyn said Saturday his meetings with people from different walks of life inspire hope that all is not lost for Russia as it struggles to recover from more than 70 years of communism. Solzhenitsyn, who arrived in the Russian Far East on May 27 after 20 years in exile, is making his way by train toMoscow. He spoke to journalists Saturday in Khabarovsk, about 8,000 kilometers east of Moscow. "I have returned to Russia on time at least because the issue of land is still open," he was quoted as saying in the Interfax report. The author, already familiar with the regions he has visited so far, was quoted as saying: "Each territory has its difficulties. All of them mirror a common Russian problem -- instability -- but everything depends on us ourselves."
