Shops Take Shelter

MOSCOW -- If bombs ever begin to fall on the town of Yaroslavl, people rushing to save their lives in bomb shelters might find themselves in the middle of a busy supermarket or a shareholders' meeting. Authorities in Yaroslavl, 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, are putting the city's 200 bomb shelters to good use, a newspaper reported Wednesday. "It's strange if such excellent underground premises, built with lots of the taxpayers' money, stay vacant," the town's chief civil-defense officer Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Rybin told the daily Izvestia.
