Russians Win at Chess

NEW YORK -- Vladimir Kramnik of Russia defeated Judit Polgar of Hungary 2-to-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Professional Chess Association's speed-chess tournament.


Polgar, 17, is the world's highest-ranked woman and the only woman in the 16-player event.


In other quarterfinal matches Wednesday, PCA world champion Garry Kasparov of Russia defeated Viswanathan Anand of India 1 1-2-to-1-2; Pedrag Nikolic of Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Michael Adams of England, winning a tie-breaking playoff after their two-game match ended 1-to-1; and Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine beat Viktor Korchnoi of Switzerland 1 1-2-to-1-2.
