Russian Juniors Prevail

EDMONTON, Alberta () -- Ukraine had a strong start but could not hold on to the momentum as it fell 4-2 in the first meeting with Russia at the World Junior hockey championship.

The mostly Ukrainian crowd of 4,000 lowered yellow and blue flags to half staff when Russian forwards Vadim Epantchinsev and Igor Melyakow beat Karpenko 12 seconds apart in the second period to make it 4-2.

In other Thursday night games, Canada remained unchallenged in the world junior championships, routing the United States 8-3 for a 24-5 margin in its first three games. And Finland kept alive its bid for a Junior World hockey championship Thursday with a 7-1 victory over Germany.
