HOUSTON () -- Baltimore Orioles' shortstop Cal Ripken has union permission to cross picket lines in 1995 to pursue the record for consecutive games played, the Houston Post reported.
The Post quoted Astros' relief pitcher Todd Jones saying that striking major league players last month gave Ripken permission to play against replacement players next season. He has played in 2,009 consecutive games and is 122 games short of breaking the 55-year-old record set by former New York Yankee Lou Gehrig.
Jones told the Post Wednesday that Ripken was told that "if you want to cross, the players' association and players' union would understand and would not say anything because this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance and is an exception."
