Reynolds in Jeopardy

DUBLIN () -- Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds faced a crisis over the handling of a child abuse case Monday that could bring down the government and jeopardize the Northern Irish peace process.

The Irish premier's Labour party coalition allies have given him a deadline to explain why the attorney general's office took seven months to deal with an extradition warrant to Northern Ireland for Brendan Smyth, a priest suspected of child abuse.

Reynolds was due to give his answer Tuesday in parliament or face the possibility of Labour's withdrawal from government. The prime minister's position has been made more uncomfortable by calls from members of his own Fianna Fail party for his resignation.
