Republic Head Quits

UFA, Bashkiria The prime minister of an autonomous republic in eastern Russia tendered his resignation Monday after a local television program about his lavish villa, Itar-Tass said.


Anatoly Kopsov, prime minister of Bashkiria, said his decision was "dictated by circumstances which do not let me perform my duties."


The documentary "Wondertown," aired last week, also featured the luxurious mansions with swimming pools and gyms that were built for other government officials.


The news agency said "Wondertown" was built "almost overnight in one of the most picturesque locations in Ufa," the republic's capital.
