Reform Reassurances

MOSCOW () -- First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais said Wednesday he had been told by President Boris Yeltsin to reassure the West about Russia's commitment to reform at the Davos World Economic Forum starting this month.

Chubais was quoted by Itar-Tass as saying that Yeltsin instructed him to tell the economic gathering "that there can be no question of making any changes in the economic course of the government generally and in the privatization policy of Russia in particular."

Chubais was clearly alluding to Western doubts about the course of reform in Russia in the light of the military crackdown in Chechnya
