Protests Surround King

BUCHAREST -- Ethnic Hungarians protested in the Romanian city of Cluj on Thursday against planned archaeological digs at a monument to a medieval Hungarian king. There were scuffles as the crowds tried to break through police cordons around the statue of King Mathias in a central Cluj square. Nationalist Cluj Mayor Gheorghe Funar has enraged ethnic Hungarians, who account for a quarter of the city's 270,000 people, by placing a Romanian inscription on the statue and removing Hungarian-language street names.
