Prosecutor to Rwanda

KIGALI () -- UN war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone arrived in Rwanda on Monday, heralding establishment of an international tribunal on the genocide that decimated the country earlier this year.

It is estimated that between 500,000 and one million Rwandans were killed in massacres of members of the Tutsi minority and moderates of the Hutu majority after the assassination of the President Juvenal Habyarimana in April.

A commission of three legal experts visited Rwanda in August and September and concluded there was overwhelming evidence the extermination was planned months in advance. Following their report, the UN Security Council last month adopted Resolution 955 and appointed Goldstone to investigate.
