MOSCOW -- Four armed prisoners who seized 17 visitors at a detention center in the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg on Wednesday beat off an attempt by police to rescue the hostages, Itar-Tass said. One of the four gunmen was killed and three police were injured in the attempt, the agency said. The prisoners were armed with two pistols and an unspecified number of knives. Police then started negotiations with the three remaining gunmen. Interfax earlier said the gang had killed one of their hostages.
