Popov: Swim Record

MONACO -- Double Olympic champion Alexander Popov of Russia set a world record of 48.21 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle swim, breaking the 6-year-old mark of American Matt Biondi. Biondi, one of Popov's idols, set his mark of 48.42 at Austin, Texas, on Aug. 10, 1988. "I'm convinced I am capable of getting under the 48-second barrier," Popov said after his Saturday triumph. "In the first 50 meters I can swim better." The new Popov record was set during an international meet at the Crown Prince Albert pool in this Riviera principality. Popov, 23, has trained in Australia for the past two years. He won gold medals in the 50- and 100-meter races in the Barcelona Olympics two years ago and had a previous 100-meter best of 48.93.
