Pension Rise Panned

MOSCOW -- Acting Finance Ministry Sergei Dubinin opposed Monday a proposed raise in pensions from 19,000 rubles ($9) to 28,700 rubles a month, saying it would require the diversion of funds from other budget items, Interfax reported.

Interfax quoted Vasily Barchuk, chairman of the Federal Pension Fund, as saying that the raise would require an extra expenditure of 7.7 trillion rubles for the last six months of 1994.

Dubinin said the law was drafted without consulting the ministry, and it would drain funds for agriculture.
