Not-So-Instant Replay

LONDON () -- British scientists say they have new proof that the controversial third goal in extra time of England's 4-2 win over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final should have been disallowed.

The Swiss referee judged the ball had crossed the line and awarded a goal after Geoff Hurst's shot hit the crossbar and bounced down.

Now scientists at Oxford University have used a new technique -- uncalibrated vision -- to show the shot did not cross the line.

Andrew Zisserman and Ian Reid of the university's engineering department spent hours studying film of the incident to plot the exact path of the ball.
