No-Confidence Defeat

BUCHAREST () -- Romania's leftist government defeated a no-confidence vote Friday called over claims it had betrayed the hopes of the Christmas 1989 revolution which toppled communism.

Prime Minister Nicolae Vacaroiu's minority Party of Social Democracy combined with traditional hardline allies to defeat the motion, launched by former premier Petre Roman's Democratic Party 249 to 206, according to national radio. Vacaroiu has now survived six similar challenges to his government since the reformed communists of the PSD emerged with the largest share of the vote at elections in 1992.
