nKey Kiev Appointment

KIEV -- President Leonid Kravchuk, fighting for re-election, nominated Wednesday a Soviet-era prime minister thrown out of office four years ago to the post of head of the Ukrainian government. Kravchuk's nomination of Vitaly Masol to be prime minister was almost certainly aimed at attracting votes in the country's eastern industrial heartland ahead of presidential elections set for June 26, and parliament's large faction of Communists and their allies, whose votes Kravchuk needs to win next week's poll, immediately lined up behind the conservative nomination. Masol became prime minister in 1987 only to be ousted in Oct. 1990 by student protesters.
