NHL Weighs Schedule

ST. LOUIS, Missouri () -- The National Hockey League said a full 84-game schedule could still be played even if its initial Saturday deadline to resolve its labor dispute and begin play is pushed back two weeks.

Brian Burke, the NHL's director of hockey operations, said Thursday a full season could be played if a collective bargaining agreement is in place by Nov. 1. But the slow pace and antagonistic tone of recent talks make that unlikely.

"We've resigned ourselves to the fact it's going to be a lengthy lockout,'' NHL Players Association spokesman Steve MacAllister said. The sides haven't met since Tuesday, when the owners rejected the players' latest contract proposal, and no new talks have been set.
