NHL Softening Stance?

LOS ANGELES () -- Under pressure from club owners -- some of whom say they will lose as much as $15 million if the season is canceled -- the National Hockey League appears to be softening its stance toward its players. An independent source said league officials are considering allowing the season to start while they continue bargaining with the players' association, a course they have twice rejected.

Representatives of the two sides met for seven hours Monday in New York as the owners' lockout entered its 38th day. Another meeting is scheduled Thursday.

In Yaroslavl, the NHL "Dream Team" of Russian stars lost its second game of its five-game charity series against Torpedo, 5-4. The NHL club scored three goals in one minute in the first period, but the home side rallied.
