New Haitian Premier

PORT-AU-PRINCE () -- Haitian Foreign Minister Claudette Werleigh will be Haiti's next prime minister if she is approved by parliament, a Haitian official said Monday.

Fritz Robert Saint Paul, president of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Haitian parliament, confirmed a report carried on Independent Radio Metropole that Werleigh, 48, was selected by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide after meetings with leaders of his Lavalas movement, which holds an overwhelming majority in parliament.

If approved by parliament, Werleigh would be Haiti's first woman prime minister. She would replace Prime Minister Smarck Michel, who resigned after a disagreement with Aristide over a privatization plan.
