New Commons Hours

LONDON () -- The House of Commons reformed its eccentric working hours Wednesday to counter accusations of "macho" late-night sessions like a Victorian gentlemen's club.

Breaking decades of tradition, it began a trial of a new workday to ease pressure on lawmakers' personal lives and allow more women to be members of parliament.

By long practice, to allow lawyers and other deputies to transact their nonpolitical business, the Commons meets Mondays through Thursdays at 2.30 P.M.

Key votes usually occur at 10 P.M. The trial replaces some Friday sittings with Wednesday morning debates.
