NATO Moscow Office

BRUSSELS () -- NATO plans to open an office in Moscow by the end of this year in the latest sign of closer relations between the Western alliance and its former superpower foe, NATO sources said Wednesday.

The sources said the unit, to be called an information activity cell, would be set up inside the French embassy. It would have a staff of two -- one French diplomat and one member of NATO's international staff -- and would function initially for a trial period of one year.

The sources said that the aim of the project was to improve the flow of information about NATO to the Russian authorities.

Russia signed on to NATO's Partnership for Peace scheme in June and the two sides are currently working on a program of military cooperation to take place under this plan.
