Nationalist Leads Polls

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia () -- Prime Minister Jozef Moravcik warned Slovaks on Friday that an election victory for deposed premier Vladimir Meciar would bring extremist rule, but supporters said he is the strong leader the young nation needs.

As polls opened for the first parliamentary elections since last year's split from Czechoslovakia, Moravcik compared Meciar to French right winger Jean-Marie Le Pen and said Slovaks had to decide between effective coalition government or a one-man show.

Meciar, a 52-year-old nationalist who led the drive to split the former Czechoslovakia, heads the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, which has a clear lead in opinion polls for the two-day elections which continue on Saturday.
