nAnti-Mafia Declaration

NAPLES, Italy () -- Ministers and top government officials from 138 countries launched a new drive Wednesday against cross-border crime with a two-part program to combat the world's mafias.

Alarmed at the rising power of international gangs, a conference called by the United Nations approved the Naples Declaration, in which nations pledged to crack down harder on crime on their own turf and cooperate closely with other countries.

Member states committed themselves to try to bring legislation into line on such issues as money laundering, while asserting that new laws covering such things as criminal association and conspiracy be introduced.
