Mir Told to Ration Power

KALININGRAD, Russia -- A top Russian official Tuesday said six cosmonauts on the ageing Mir space station would have to ration electricity for several months after the craft's solar batteries were unexpectedly drained.

Viktor Blagov, deputy head of space missions, said problems first appeared Oct. 11 after a powerful piece of electrical equipment unexpectedly sprang to life, shutting down part of the station and running down four of the six batteries.

"We can only put another four solar batteries on board Mir in the middle of next year. Until then the cosmonauts will have to ration electricity," he told a news conference at the Russian mission control center in Kaliningrad, north of Moscow.
