Miners Prolong Strike

ALMATY, Kazakhstan () -- Coal miners working on the site of a former Soviet penal colony in Kazakhstan voted Thursday to continue a strike because the government, struggling with economic reform, has not paid their wages for months.

Vyacheslav Sidorov, who leads about 100,000 miners in the Karaganda region, said the miners voted at a mass meeting to continue with their week-old stoppage and that the strike had halted production at 20 out of 23 pits. "There is no question of stopping the strike," Sidorov said.
