Mideast Talks Resume

CAIRO () -- Palestinian and Israeli negotiators began a fresh round of talks in Cairo on Wednesday to try to clear obstacles holding up Palestinian self-rule elections.

Palestinians, speaking before the start of the session in a Cairo hotel, rejected Israel's suggestion that elections go ahead in the West Bank while occupying Israeli troops remain in Arab towns and cities.

Chief Palestinian delegate Nabil Shaath said. "These are land-for-peace negotiations, not elections for peace. We want an Israeli troop withdrawal from the West Bank to precede Palestinian elections."
