Marcos' Offer Refused

MANILA () -- An unrepentant Imelda Marcos said Wednesday she had offered $30 million to compensate victims of human rights abuses during her late husband's 20-year rule as Philippine president.

But she said U.S. lawyer Robert Swift spurned her offer without even consulting the "so-called" victims. Swift said he turned the $30 million proposal down because it was too low.A Hawaiian jury has found the late Ferdinand Marcos's estate liable for human rights violations in a class suit filed by Swift on behalf of 10,000 victims. It awarded the victims $1.2 billion in damages, but to avoid protracted legal squabbling, the judge in the case proposed $100 million as an out-of-court settlement which Swift had said would be acceptable to the victims.
