Life Bans Challenged

BUCHAREST () -- The International Olympic Committee does not want life bans for athletes found guilty of doping, president Juan Antonio Samaranch said.

Samaranch said Tuesday that the committee believed limited bans were more effective in encouraging better behavior.

"I think a two-year ban is the most productive solution for a doping case and it is better than a four-year ban for a performer found positive," Samaranch told a news conference.

Different sports have different penalties for doping offenders. The severest penalty in athletics is a life ban for a second positive test, while bans of four years for a first offense are common.
