Li Peng Ducks Visits

WEIMAR, Germany-- Chinese Prime Minister Li Peng snubbed Berlin's mayor and cut short a visit to Weimar on Thursday as demonstrators at both sites protested against Beijing's human rights record. The protests were the first serious demonstrations Li has met in Germany after three days of meetings with German politicians and businessmen. The mayor of Berlin was left waiting for Li's party at the Brandenburg Gate as German and Chinese protesters waved banners proclaiming "Mass murderer Li Peng." Li, regarded as responsible for Beijing's Tienanmen Square events in 1989, ducked the stroll and flew to Weimar. There he cut short an address on Goethe, cancelled a tour and left for Munich.
