Lagos Considers Appea

LAGOS, Nigeria () -- The fate of convicted Nigerian coup plotters whose secret trial and sentencing have provoked world outrage will be reviewed by the country's military rulers Tuesday, government officials have said.

South African Deputy President Thabo Mbeki was told at a dinner by Nigeria's No. 2, Lieutenant General Oladipo Diya, that the National Defense Council would meet Tuesday to consider the clemency appeals and make their recommendations to the Provisional Ruling Council.

Mbeki spent three days in the Nigerian capital Abuja where he was sent by South Africa's Nelson Mandela to try to persuade Abacha to show clemency.
