KIEV () -- President Leonid Kuchma said Ukraine was meeting its obligations on nuclear disarmament but had received only a tiny fraction of aid promised from the United States, a local news agency said Wednesday.
Interfax-Ukraine said Kuchma, speaking at the Pervomaisk strategic rocket base in southern Ukraine hours after meeting U.S. Vice President Al Gore, said Ukraine had received only $6 million of a promised $350 million in U.S. aid.
Gore, who invited Kuchma to meet President Bill Clinton on Nov. 29 in Washington during his six-hour trip to Kiev on Tuesday, told journalists the United States was satisfied Ukraine was fulfilling its side of a disarmament accord signed in January by then-president Leonid Kravchuk, Clinton and President Boris Yeltsin.
