Kravchuk Bids for Seat

KIEV (x) -- Former Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk, defeated in last month's election, will run for a seat in the former Soviet republic's parliament, electoral officials said.

The officials told Interfax Ukraine on Wednesday that Kravchuk had submitted the necessary papers to contest a seat in the western district of Ternopil in a September by-election.

Kravchuk, Ukraine's first post-Soviet president, was beaten last month by former Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma. Despite his defeat he has vowed to continue being active in politics.

He is likely to win the seat in nationalist western Ukraine, which supported him heavily in the election as the standard-bearer of pro-Ukrainian sentiment.
