Knesset Votes for Peace

JERUSALEM () -- In what Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin called an attempt to stop a "never-ending circle of violence," Israel's parliament on Friday narrowly ratified an agreement giving the PLO control over West Bank cities after 28 years of Israeli occupation.

The accord was approved 61-59 after a 15-hour debate in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, and a protest by more than 20,000 Israelis chanting "Rabin is a traitor."

Rabin had declared the proceedings a vote of confidence in the government.

"This [occupation] is not a solution for peace," he said. "We can continue to kill and be killed, but we can also try to stop this never-ending circle of violence."
