Kawasaki Advances

KAWASAKI, Japan () -- Japan's Verdy Kawasaki beat Hong Kong's Eastern Athletics 3-0 in the Asian Club Championship and advanced into the second round.

The Japanese will play Pakistan's Crescent Mills in the second round, scheduled for Oct. 11 at Kawasaki.

The Eastern Athletics entered Monday's game after another 3-0 loss Sept. 19 to the Japanese team, two-time champions in the Japanese Professional Soccer League.

The championship has attracted a record entry of 28 clubs, with 13 of them battling in the west Asia division, the remaining teams in east Asia.

Verdy Kawasaki clinched the championship in 1987, when the team was called Yomiuri Nippon FC, its name before the Japan Professional League came into existence.
