Kabul Attacks Kill 35

KABUL () -- Rockets rained over the Afghan capital Kabul on Monday, killing at least 35 people and wounding 98 on the eve of planned talks between a UN peace envoy and a key factional leader, hospital sources said.

President Burhanuddin Rabbani's administration blamed the attack on his opponents, led by Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and northern warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum.

It followed a devastating bombardment that killed 45 people Friday, and came just before Hekmatyar was due to meet United Nations envoy Mahmoud Mestiri in Afghanistan on Tuesday as part of UN-led efforts to end factional fighting that has killed more than 12,000 people in Kabul since the Islamic mujahedin took power from a collapsed communist government in April 1992.
