"Our government is concerned about shooting incidents taking place in the vicinity of the Northern Territories," Murayama told the Japanese parliament. Murayama stressed that the shooting occurred in spite of pleas by the Japanese government.
Murayama was speaking two days after Russian coast guards fired on and sank a Japanese fishing vessel in waters near Shikotan, one of four disputed Russian-held islands off the coast of northern Japan.
