Japan Denounces Ban

TOKYO () -- Japan denounced an Antarctic sanctuary for whales that went into effect Tuesday, and said it would not be bound by the ban since it had filed an objection with the International Whaling Commission.

Tokyo objected to the inclusion of minke whales among the species protected by the sanctuary -- which bans all commercial whaling around Antarctica -- arguing that those whales are numerous enough to allow regular catches.

Masayuki Komatsu, deputy director of the fisheries agency, said the ban is unjustifiable on scientific grounds, and that attempts to push through the ban amounted to "cultural imperialism."
