RIGA, Latvia -- Authorities in Latvia are continuing a nationwide manhunt a week after the largest jail break in the Baltic nation's history.
Forty-nine convicts are still on the run. Hopes are fading that all the escapees can be captured, officials said Thursday.
The Interior Ministry said that some prisoners may have already slipped across the border and will be hard to track down.
"I don't think we'll ever catch everyone," said Vladimir Korovinsky, a ministry spokesman. "We think we'll get the majority of them though."
A total of 89 inmates escaped through a hand-dug tunnel last Thursday from the Parlielupe Prison in Jelgave, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the capital Riga. There were four murderers and 50 convicted thieves among them.
In the latest capture, police nabbed a convict who had fallen asleep in a car he had just stolen. Earlier, two prisoners were caught after raping a 17-year-old girl at a countryside bus stop.
