Italy Awaits Ruling

ROME () -- Italy's Constitutional Court met Monday to decide whether to give the go-ahead to a referendum on electoral reform that could lead to fresh general elections by the summer.

The court's ruling, expected later this week, could have a major impact on the crisis that has rocked the country since the resignation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Dec. 22.

Berlusconi is pressing President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro for a snap general election March 26.

But any referendum would have to be held between April 15 and June 15.
