IMF Presses Ukraine

KIEV () -- International Monetary Fund officials said Monday they would insist on Ukraine keeping to agreed inflation targets to secure the next tranche of a $1.5 billion standby loan.

"We would not be able to accept higher inflation targets," said IMF Kiev representative Graeme Justice. Support for economic sectors would have to come from the budget, not "cheap credits," he said.

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said last month that Ukraine would be unable to meet monthly inflation goals of 1 to 2 percent by the end of the year.
